This project involved the construction of a pre-engineered steel structure over top of an existing outdoor ice pad. The facility provides year round use for the community – it has an ice surface in the winter for hockey, figure skating, and public recreational skating. In the non-winter months it is used for basketball, ball hockey, art shows and other community events.
The foundation for this structure had to be designed to accommodate the existing arena slab so that it would not disturb or undermine the existing concrete floor. The primary structural frames came to the site with Butler’s standard primer and were finish painted on-site by a local subtrade to provide protection for the frames that are exposed to the elements. The secondary structure is acrylic-galvanized providing protection for those components.
The project consisted of the following Butler systems – Widespan structural system and Butlerib through-fastened roof system.
